Staffing Ratios Stories

Bruce Corkum
Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, Outpatient/Inpatient
I've been a health professional for 10 years.
In a normal shift I care for 4-5 patients.
"Reduced staffing creates an increased risk for infection and injuries and, on average, increases a patient's length of stay. It reduces time for providing patient education and discharge teaching. [Safe staffing ratios] allow for improved quality of care, increase time spent with patients, and ensure a consistent standard based on best practices.
"Senate Bill 564 would help improve patient care by establishing a safe nurse-to-patient ratio which would reduce burnout and provide improved working conditions for RNs. It would increase the transparency of nurse-to-patient staffing ratios. SB 564 would improve the retention and recruitment of RNs."

Samantha Owens
Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, Telemetry
I've been a health professional for 18 years.
In a normal shift I care for 4-8 patients.
"A nurse is supposed to be the safety stop for the patient. We are supposed to be able to double check the medications and procedures against evidence-based medicine. When a nurse cannot get to the chart to check the orders off because they are prioritizing patient care first and has too many patients at one time, patient safety is lost and errors occur.
"Safe staffing ratios, like those outlined in SB 564, would help improve patient care. Limiting the amount of patients decreases the interruptions a nurse will have to cope with while delivering patient care. It allows time to check orders and procedures to ensure patients are receiving safe care. Patients deserve a nurse to talk to and learn from. Limiting patient loads will give nurses enough time to spend some quality time at each bedside without having to look at HPPDs [hours per patient day]."

Liz Middlebrook
Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, Med/Surg
I've been a health professional for 20 years.
In a normal shift I care for 4 patients.
"Last rotation (8/26-9/1) I had four patients, all diabetic, with one being on drip with frequent CBG checks. This was overwhelming. It was all I could do to pass out meds and do my assessments. I felt like my patients were neglected. On my last day I only had one diabetic and my attention to my patients was much better.
"Safe staffing ratios, like those outlined in SB 564, would help improve patient care by: defining numbers of patients per RN/CNA, which leads to safe patient care. It is all about the patient--not the profit the organization makes!"

Shinon DeLong
Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, Med/Surg
I've been a health professional for 2 years.
In a normal shift I care for 5 patients.
"Short staffing affects the quality of care I am able to provide because when I have over four patients, there is not enough time to give quality care for each patient!
"Safe staffing ratios, like those outlined in SB 564, would improve quality of care. Every patient deserves the best care that we are able to provide! The main issue is safety for all patients!"

Robin M. Dailey
Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center, Critical Care
I've been a health professional for 12 years.
In a normal shift I care for 4-14 patients.
"Short staffing affects the quality of care I am able to provide because it limits the time I have to spend at the bedside. My facility and liability driven responsibility is to my documentation of care first, then the patient.
"Safe staffing ratios, like those outlined in SB 564, would help improve patient care by establishing caps management cannot screw with!"
